    Hi,

can anyone directly compare the noise this two drives produce?
I recently moved from a Fujitsu MHZ2160BJ (7200) to a Hitachi 5K500.B (5400), and the Hitachi is definitely louder.

Does the WD5000BEVT produce less noise than the Hitachi?

    Hi
I have WD5000BEVT but when I had it in laptop I could hear quite loud not too much but there is rotating wind noise
and mine in idle was doing up and down noise like:
    ''huuu-up and huuu-down''
    BUT!
Once I have now this HDD in enclosure Box Transcend I cant hear it :)
That is funny isn't it :D

I've got both. The WD makes a slight "wooshing" noise while the 5K500.B makes a slight ticking noise when the heads move. You need to be in a very quiet room to hear either of them.

Does the wd5k500 vibrate a lot when your laptop is on?

i just got a 5K500.B 500gb to replace my 5k250 250gb in my Vaio Z and i couldn't be happier. battery life is slightly up, hd stays a couple degrees cooler and i don't hear any clicking or noise from the drive at all while at the same time, feel a performance increase over the 5k250.

No, the 5k500.b does not vibrate at all. But it makes a hissing noise which is clearly audible in a normal working position.
For the Fujitsu 160Gb I had to put my ear 10cm above the hdd-cover to be able to hear it.

odd, my 5k500b doesn't make any noise other than a soft tick that I have to put my head to the computer to hear.

Maybe your HDD noise is drowned out by your fan noise? Mine isn't active 75% of the time.

Don't forget different firmware can make a difference.
The laptop can also make a difference.

And there is allso the luck of the draw. One 5K500.b can make different sounds than the other, even if they have the same firmware.

nah. noise-free room, extremely quiet fan.

maybe my laptop has more shielding/padding...but then again, I tested the volume by plugging the hdd into an external enclosure with the top off. just to see how it sounded. didn't hear a thing.

    oh well.

I'm currently looking for a bigger HDD for my E6400. I have the Fujitsu MHZ2160BJ (7200rpm, 160GB) installed and would like to upgrade to the Western Digital WD5000BEVT (5400rpm, 500GB).
How do these two compare in general and in terms of speed?

It will be impossible to notice any speed difference without using a stopwatch/benchmark.

    Agreed.

However, the WD5000BEVT uses significantly less power.

John was referring to the Fujitsu MHZ2160BJ.

As in: WD5000BEVT uses significantly less power than Fujitsu MHZ2160BJ.

Page 1 of that article is here. It is very interesting and shows how little difference there is in most of the tests. I wonder whether the 7200.4 included there didn't have the latest firmware.

Thanks for posting. I think it's a very good article.

It's the first one that does extensive real world benchmarks of the Seagate 7200.4.
