This laptop is a Presario Compaq, almost 2 years old.

When ever a Cd or DVD is placed into the drive, this terrible noise occurs as the computer is reading the disc. As of now, it is reading everything fine; things install, music plays, and movies can be burned. It's just that there is this loud terrible grating sound. I am suspicious that this is the drive's way of telling me that it is dying. Am I right? What can/should I do?

My desktop sounds the same, time for a new drive IMO.

Those things do wear out, but maybe first check if there is any dirt on the head (which is somewhat delicate so it would need to be cleaned very carefully).
