Is there any way to have non-powered external speakers on a laptop? I've read about some external sound cars, will those provide the power?
I have an Asus V-1S and am hoping to power some Ambiance 62 In-Wall Speakers ( http://www.hifi.com/store/category.cgi?category=spk_inwall&item=53CW0095AA000) without a component amplifier.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

No not any normal soundcard. You will not drive 100w speakers. Simply put look at your notebook adapter? What is it 90w? I believe USB speakers that get power from USB but maybe 5w.
You just can't get the power you need through a notebook. -
There are two different types of speakers
Active: Have built in amplifiers. Need power source but not an Amp
Passive: Need an amplifier/power source. One cable usually does both! Links amplifier to speaker as well as bridging power
Having a speaker system connected to 2 USB ports would only give you about 5W.
Simply put, your not going to be able to power any speakers other then minimal 2.0 speaker set up via USB. There just isnt simply enough wattage going through your laptops and to the outputs.
You are going to need to bridge your speakers to an amplifier and power source and connect your laptop somehow to the amplifier.
Hope this helps! Good luck! -
Yeah, that's what figured, just hoping there was something I was missing. A receiver with hdmi between the two is is. Thanks a ton for the quick responses.
