Currently building myself a machine. I ideally want 6GB of ram but newegg.ca only has matching speeds in a 2x1 + 4x1 if I go with 2 different brands. Is it generally a bad idea to mix brands for RAM?

Mixing is almost never a problem between brands or speeds. Between brands nothing matters, as it is all the dozens of memory timings and voltage settings that your computer cares about. Between memory of different specs, it doesn't matter because your computer will set all of it to the least common denominator.
