It's about 60C at idle and goes up to 70C. Is that normal?

Depending on the ambient temps and the specific chassis it's in (and the BIOS defaults, limitations and settings from the notebook manufacturer...) this sounds about right.

    It's in a Dell e6230 12.5" computer.

what graphics card has it got.
60c is a little raised but 50-55c is normal. but as mentioned if its summer where you are ambient temps can be a killer.
also do you clean your vents and fans out with compressed air on a regular basis. if no this can add 10c easily depending how clogged up they are.
while gaming it can go upto 85c-90c
anything over 90c needs looking into. could need a repaste on cpu/gpu.

    See:
Review Dell Latitude E6230 Notebook - NotebookCheck.net Reviews

According to the link this notebook should be around 40 C when idle and can reach over 100 C when stressed. It also has excellent accessibility to the fan and cooling system; so as has been suggested by MrDJ; carefully and thoroughly clean the fan and see if it idles cooler for you.

Otherwise, you may want to attempt a repasting with a good quality TIM. This is recommended as this chassis seems to run very warm (limited cooling capacity).

Oh, and no dedicated graphic card is available with this system (according to the link).

    Cheers!

Temperatures without posting an ambient temperature is useless.

If your ambient was 50C, then your idle temps aren't too horrible. If your ambient was 20C, you have a serious problem.

Ambient temps would be nice, but according to the review/link I posted; the idle temps are too high while the 'high' temps are well within reason (without knowing the workload, of course).

If I were in another country, it's be about 6C. Since I'm in the US, it's 50F.

You are using your computer at 6C? Can you type with gloves... or, are you a hhhhoootttt blooded animal? :)

You must be stating outdoor temps - not room temps, right?

Normal can be such a subjective term so I prefer to think in terms of average. Even so, those temps are certainly within the normal operating range if not a bit on the high side. But they're certainly nothing to be alarmed about.

Still, if you want to lower those temps even more you might try some of the aforementioned remedies.

However, if I were you, I might first try some of the more simple solution since operating temp. can be effected by other factors not the least of which are ambient temperature, surfaces and/or position and angle of your unit. Modify those first, then see what happens.

Yeah. You're right. I checked the weather outside. I guess it was about 20C inside. It's about 50-60 at idle. I bought some Artic Silver. I'll see if it lowers the temp. Can't hurt, I guess.

I applied Artic Silver and so far it's 40-50 without the fan. It's below that with the fan so I'd say the repaste was worth at least -10C.
