hi, i am getting a laptop for college and have waited for intel's new platform to finally come out in the HP Dv5t that i am looking at. I have been doing a few configurations and i ran across a question. Which processor is better? the T9400 has 6m cache while the P8600 only has 3m cache. But the P8600 runs at 25watts while the T9400 runs at 35 watts. Both have 1066 front side bus. I cant figure out which is a better processor. Money doesnt matter as far as the processor so which one is an overall better choice? thanks

P8600 would have slightly better battery life and lower temperatures then the T9400

Unless you're planning on doing CPU-intensive tasks, such as video encoding, rendering, and other such tasks, the 3MB of cache on the P8600 will do you fine, and with what X2P mentioned, you'll benefit from cooler temperatures and some improvement to battery life.
I suggest the P8600, so long as it fits what you'll be doing.

And even if you are doing those kinds of tasks, the P8600 will do you fine, as it is quite a fast CPU.

agreed, the p8600

ok thanks guys!

Thanks... -
the t9300 is still a very good buy can be found @ebay under 260$ at times
-
Unfortunately the T9300 is not compaitible with Centrino 2 (it uses a different socket), so that won't fit in the OP's notebook.

Is the P8600 good enough for casual AVCHD video editing?
Not clear which is a better processor? T9400 or the P8600
