I just bought a gateway 7805u and I want to swap out the hard drives. I am not sure what to do and I was wondering what you guys think is best.
I am trying to decide between getting 2 500 GB 7200 RPM seagates raid 0, 1 SSD + 1 500GB 7200 RPM seagate, or two SSDs in raid.
How much more benefit would I get out of running two SSDs in raid and is it worth the loss of space. I want good performance but I have a lot of stuff and even though I have a 1TB external drive I do want to be able to not rely on it completely and I want to be able to pick up my laptop and take it to a friend's house while still having my music and stuff. (I have like 170GB of music).
I am kind of leaning towards the third option of having one SSD and one normal HD.
And if I do get an SSD what should I go for. Should I get an intel super high speed drive or should I go for a more high capacity SSD.
Do you think 80GB will be enough to be able to save all of my programs, games, etc so I would only have to use an HD for more static stuff like music, downloads, etc.?

i guess that it is definitely enough, especially if you're running xp. if it's vista, it's consuming more space, but still (if you don't have tens of huge games installed), 80 GB should be sufficient.

I was thinking of getting:

but its just soooo expansive. Is there anything that has good performance for a little less. Maybe in the 200-300 range.
How good is the quality on the Patriot Warp Series: http://www.amazon.com/Patriot-PE128...8?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1236643888&sr=1-8
I've also noticed that the G.Skill SSDs are often put in by "7805u upgraders" so there has to be something good about em'

Get the SSD drive and 7200rpm combo unless you have the extra $$$ to spend.

If you want performance, Intel SLC then MLC is the way to go. Other than that, for best value, I would only consider Samsung SLC (64GB for $180 is the best deal!) then MLC and Mtron 3500 SLC for reliable SSDs. I would use the SSD as my main drive with a 500GB drive as secondary, you don't even need the 7200RPM if you're just storing files. Save on the 500GB drive and spend on the SSD.

Not sure what hard drive configuration to go for..
