I went to the store today to buy some cables for my notebook but came home empty handed due to my abject ignorance. I have an HP dv6500 and there are three things I'd like to accomplish:

    - Connect the notebook to a high definition TV to watch video and jpeg based slideshows (run on my notebook; watched on the TV).

    - Connect the notebook to the HDVT to use the TV as an external monitor.

    - watch and listen to videos and podcasts, downloaded to my ipod, on the HTDV.

If someone would be so kind, what types of cables and/or set-up do I need?

    Thanks so much.

For the first 2... you need a VGA cable :)

iPod...you need to buy one of those AV cables for iPod sets...

I think the HP has the HDMI port that you can connect to the HDTV, you will need the HDMI cable. I'm not sure how that works since I don't have the HDMI port.
and yes if the TV has the VGA analog, it's much easier.

If the HDMI port works like the one on the 8510p, then all you do is plug in the HDMI and it displays on the tv.

HDMI or DVI are the top 2 ways to go, older laptops may have VGA wich is ok but not quite as good.

Older than that or less 'advanced" may just have Svideo wich pretty much sucks, you may get away with a jpeg slide show and thats about it.

Thank you all for the help.

I got a bit confused because the notebook also has:

    - an external monitor port (manual says it connects an external VGA monitor or projector).

    - an S-Video-out jack (connects an optional S-Video device such as a television, VCR, camcorder, overhead projector, or video capture card).

So the HDMI port is the way to go since the TV/Monitor has a HDMI port. I need to get one that looks like this: HDMI to HDMI.

Is there anything else I need to know? Thanks again.

OK, now I'm catching on. Thinking outloud then:

I also have a JBL Radial High-Performance iPod Loudspeaker that has a S-Video out port to connect to a TV. So I need to get a separate cable for that too.

Now I just have to convince my husband to get rid of the old TV and get a large LCD TV so I can set up most of this stuff in one place. The LCD TV/Monitor I've been talking about is for my office.
