Hey everyone! I'm a new notebook user and I was wondering what I should to with my notebook when I'm not using it for an extended period of time. Should I shut it down, hibernate it, put it on standby or just leave it running idle? Is it hard on the notebook to start up? Thanks for the help.

    Well its up to you.

Some people dont even shutdown their laptop while others do. Basically shutdown ends every processor/program/hardware while standby is low power state that saves your work and quickly returns you to your desktop when you power up your computer again while hibernate is when your opened files and your desktop are saved to the hard drive and your computer shuts down(no power)
    Use Standby and Hibernate

After a certain number of minutes(customize in Power option) idleingyour laptop will go in standby or whatever you chose.

I use hibernate or shutdown when i know i am going to leave my house for a couple of hours and i have my lappy set to got o standye after 1 hour and i shutdown when i go to sleep.

Is it physically hard on the notebook components to bootup though?

Its not hard on notebook hardware, whenever it needs to boot up. However, its generally not healthy to be powering on and off frequently. Its best to simply use either the Standby or Hibernation feature, as these retain your immediate settings and allow you to work on whatever you were before.

I use standby if I'm only going to be away from it for an hour or so, otherwise I hibernate. Then I reboot at least once a week.
