Asus and Sony...Sony and Asus... The quality, fit and finish between these two are impeccable.
-
Okay... it's time to clear this up! Bring in Alberto Gonzales!!!
(sorry, i couldn't help it- he he) -
No, because the brand still chooses the quality of the parts that they buy and they also have different quality controls. Also, the general architechture vary from brand to brand.
A very clear example is Acer, that in some laptops have an x1600 video card just like some Asus models. However, to cut costs, and also because of a crappy heat control, the card in Acer has way less power than the one on the Asus.
And about quality control, for instance, for most Asus models they guaranty no black spot in your screen, as other brands only answer with 5 or more spots. -
ThinkPads are the best in quality for regular notebooks. They stress a lot in safety and build quality. Panasonic tough books are also a great choice if you need a rock solid notebook. Their name suggests what they are.

I would have to say after looking at Sony, Dell, Acer, and Gateway; I am very happy with my ASUS. It is great, hands down the best laptop I have seen.
-
Thinkpads win this quality contest hands down.

Thinkpads have the best build quality, but Latitudes are a better value.
-
If you're talking build quality, probably Lenovo with their Thinkpads and Dell with their Latitudes..
However, Asus and Sony do offer quite sturdy machines and at the same time are very stylish. -
Well, only if you catch those Latitudes on sale
-
qauntix and compal make half of all of them
-
HP, Sony, and Toshiba.
I would buy HP and Sony notebook only though. Toshiba has no chance of including BD Drive -
I'd say in no particular order that the following three would be the best quality: IBM, Asus, and Compal

Panasonic, no doubt. Those toughbooks are so solid and well built it just blows everything else on that list out of the water. Every laptop I've ever handled, when you pick it up by just one side, it makes squeak and creak plastic noises and the whole thing flexes a little. Not the toughbook, it's like picking up a solid slab of rock. Simply amazing. I have an old CF-71 (Pentium 2) but I hear the newer models are just as good. My CF-71 was built in 1997 - it's 10 years old. The screen hinge is just as solid and tight and crisp as it was in 1997. Same goes for the keyboard and various other buttons. Its build quality is "above and beyond" in all regards. I used it and abused it for 10 years and not a single part has worn out or broken.
I've never seen another laptop, hp, compaq, ibm, dell, apple, anything that has even close to the build quality of the toughbook. Anyone who says otherwise has never used one before. -
I forgot about the Toughbook, yes, I'd agree that it is the most durable but, at least based on the last time I looked, they lack the hardware performance that the other companies provide.

Toughbooks are not quite as durable as Rugged NoteBooks.

Yes, unfortunate but true. I looked at some new ones last month when I bought the hp dv9500t. I was disappointed to see they didn't offer any NVidia or ATI cards. I guess it's hard to make a water / dust / dirt / mud / sand resistant notebook if it requires big exhaust vents.
Oh well, maybe someday.
Then again, I guess it's designed with military customers in mind, and they don't need a 3D card to play Ghost Recon - they can go out and 'play' it for real!
Hey, you cheated! That one's not on the list!!
-
Man, I would love get my hands on one of those!
-
yup ibm laptops are pretty solid. i just hate how they look.
