I like this guide.... I aint a "newbie" to computers, just the site, I would say that this will help those that are needing to get a laptop just for their personality or reasoning. Neway, You should add some software and apple macintosh products along with it.

Nice Notebook buying guide
I am looking to buy a notebook
has anyone ever bought one abroad ? a friend of mine bought his notebook here at Notebook-Shop
has anyone a clue about warranty ?
think Toshiba or Asus have international warranty anyway... -
I'd replace the Sony FE with Asus S/Z96J. Absolutely beastly value there.
E1505's and DV6000's can both be had for under $900, well equipped too. -
I know it is a newer offering in the under $2000 class but the Toshiba P100ST9012 is a great buy. Core duo with 7900GTX 512m 17" 5400rpm HD $1699
way nicer than a G2 with a 7700 look at the specs on Nivida.com -
I don't know if this is still being updated, but you might consider changing Doom 3 and Battelfield 2 to Fear and Oblivion. Also consider mentioning SLI rigs in the Gaming category.

I am a digital photographer going to France this summer for a photography workshop. I need as modestly priced a laptop as possible ($1000 or less), a very good bright monitor preferably adjustable, 1 GB of RAM, good but not huge storage - just for Photoshop CS2 and downloaded images from daily shooting, a CD/DVD burner and not too heavy because I have to schlepp it therough airport security lines and onto planes. Any suggestions?

Thanks for the guide, I am a newbie, teaching in Korea and was offered aTG Averatec 6700 for very cheap but didn't know anything at all about computers. I would only be watching DVD's, lesson planning and some picture work on this computer, however I do travel every weekend and will be taking this with me, many weekends. Your guide enabled me to know that this model is more than enough for what I will be doing with it, thanks again as I couldn't get anyone else's help here, so your guide is VERY, VERY helpful to us newbies

Hello. I'm new to the forum and in doing some research came across your post (Jamieos). I'm looking for something similar - a loptop to use for digital photo/video especially when traveling - and was wondering if you had ever heard back from anyone... or perhaps you've already purchased?
For what it's worth, I've been looking at the Toshiba A205-4577 and the HP dv6345us. On the other hand I used to travel quite a bit and became quite fond of small lightweight computers and so have also been checking out the Toshiba U205-5057 as well as the HPdv2315us.
My big question though is related to digital video - for editing it is suggested to use a 7200rpm drive but that little tidbit is from the days of IDE. Not too sure if that is true with SATA. A rep at Best Buy stated "that's old school thinking" but the more I chatted with him the more I felt like he was full of BS.
Thoughts from anyone checking out this forum would be much appreciated! -
You can usually ignore whatever you hear from BB people.
The difference between the IDE and SATA in laptops [unlike desktops] is negligible. As for the 7200RPM, I also recommend it for video editing. -
Good article, I would also suggest reading my rugged laptop buying guide, maybe you will also find good information.

i have a question about laptop security... as a college student, would it be worth an extra $100-$400 for a longer warranty, accidental damage and lojack theft protection? it just seems like a ton of money for only 1-2 years.

I think this thread needs to be updated in a serious way...
