Say I wanted to get an external hard drive for my notebook. Does the speed of the external hd matter as much as the one the notebook has already? I know a faster hd will load programs and the like faster. I was just thinking that if I got a faster external HD than what I have now would that help performance for everything that is on it? Say I installed my games and HD heavy applications to the external HD, would it really help at all? Or would it be restricted still since it is connected via USB port?
Yes I am a little of a notebook newbie, so thanks for the help!

Peformance might be restricted by the USB bandwidth speed limit. If you do want a external HDD, then replace the current HDD in your notebook with the faster 7200rpm HD and use the old(original) drive in an external enclousure.
Notebook HD..
