I want to put some new memory in my Dell Inspiron 8600, this thing just keeps on ticking. It needs PC2700 200 pin DDR. I want two 1 GB sticks.
Can I put memory with a faster clock speed, say 533, in place of the 333? I know desktop memory can easily be underclocked, not sure if this holds true in a notebook. The concern I have is the voltage. The 533 is 4v while the 333 is 2.5v.
My local going out of business Compusa has some Kingston notebook memory but I'm having trouble identifying it. The package says:
Kingston Platinum NB 500 (there is also a version saying 100)
No where on the internet is Kingston Platinum to be found, dubious.
I am hoping I can use one of this discounted Kingston chips.

I believe DDR only goes up to PC3200 (400Mhz) PC4200 (533Mhz) would be DDR2 and incompatible. I think you can use PC4200 but likely will only work at lower supported speed.

Simply put - No.
You have a motherboard that accepts DDR modules and not DDR2 (the 533 you quoted is DDR2)
They are very different and as such the notches are not even in the same place so you can't accidentally blow your computer by putting the wrong ram in. -
But, there are DDR 333 and DDR 400. Will a DDR 333 motherboard accept DDR 400 memory? I understand the memory would only run at 333 if this works. -
But if you buy PC3200 confirm it is DDR and not DDR2 (comes in both) so it fits as said above.

400mhz will be fine, it will just downclock to 333mhz without issue - just make sure you get DDR otherwise your cheap ram will become an expensive mistake.

Thanks! I'm going for it.
