My Sony S-360 has two 256MB DDR333 (PC-2700) sticks right now, and the specifications state that it supports up to 1GB total. There is this 1GB DDR3 (PC-2700) stick for sale in a store near me right now for $35, and:
- is it possible to switch out one 256MB stick for this 1GB stick?
- how much memory will the system read? That is to say, how is the memory limited, per slot or in terms of total? That would make the difference between 256MB + 512MB = 768MB
or 256 + 768MB = 1024MB.
Thanks for your time!

Run CPU-Z and check in the Mainboard Page --> Chipset ?
-
It says Chipset Intel i855PM Rev. A3
-
The chipset does support upto 2GB DDR-333 Max.
But if the manufacturer states 1GB as the limit, I doubt Motherboard Support and BIOS Support.
You could try out 1GB + 0.256GB
So, before upgrading, flash the latest BIOS version. And find out if the 1GB module is refundable. -
your system has a Bios limitation of 1Gb, so the most you can install is 512mb per memory slot.
If the store is nearby, you can bring your laptop their and ask to see if the memory will work before buying it or whatever, and maybe you can test their to see if it recognizes more than 1gb of memory.
If you are looking for other deals, I think a guy in the buy and sell section is selling some 512mb Pc2700 or Pc3200 memory modules which will work in your laptop. Your laptop uses ddr sodimm memory
