I have a HP ZE 4400 here that after the power button is pushed, it will reboot itself after (3) seconds. It continues this rebooting issue until the system is turned off.

It will not turn off using the power button since in reverts to the battery. I have to pull the battery to get it to turn off.

    What's going on here ?

    TIA

Sounds like your CPU's cooler might have detached, thus overheating the CPU forcing it to reboot.

Does the unit get to the POST?

When is the last time you cleaned the dust bunnies out? That could be causing your overheating which would cause it to reboot. By the way, I have that same laptop. Still running very well after all this time. Don't use it much except for testing purposes.

That's what I'm kinda thinking as well. Maybe the thermal paste dried out or something ??

Maybe the thermal chip on the MB is fried ??? How would I check that out ?

Does NOT even get to the POST screen.

10 seconds ago. Got a good puff of dust out the vent but the problem still remains.

Any other ideas ?? I'm going to disassemble it a bit and check out the CPU cooler/paste.

I tore the laptop down and looked at the CPU/Heatsink connection. The old thermal pad is very discolored and appears wasn't making good contact.

Now, how can I tell if the CPU was actually damaged OR if it was just that the thermal pad deteriorated ???

fix the thermal pad or get it replaced or fix the contact problem. then turn it on. it should be working again. if not then its a CPU problem
