Anyone know the recommended voltage of, and safe maximum voltage that I can apply to a laptop cooling fan?

It's an 11 bladed 55mm diameter fan from an IBM thinkpad, circa 2003. It has no specifications stamped on it, but from what I can find online they seem to be mostly 5 volts, which is handy since I have a 5 volt charger adapter to use on it.

However, I'd much rather run it at 12 or 18 volts, if it would stand up to that kind of current reliably. It's for a piece of machinery, I just need a good steady airflow to apply a slight positive pressure to the motor housing, to keep sawdust and other crud from coming in through the cracks and crevices and interfering with the motor.
