Let's start with: i did something stupid. I wanted to upgrade the memory of my laptop from 2 to 4gb. it arrived today and i installed it directly. But, i forgot to remove the battery while replacing the modules, and now my laptop is dead (blank screen, lights go on a bit, hdd doesnt spin). I still have warranty so i brought it to the store where i bought it and lets hope they'll repair it/something.

But, i'm wondering, can the new modules now also be damaged, or, what is the chance. If i would get back my laptop, repaired (hopefully ;) ), can i savely install these modules (this time, without the battery in it ;) ) Or is there a chance that they might damage my laptop? (the modules are new, etc, so i dont suspect these for causing my laptop to die)

    Thanks a lot

There is a chance they are dead.

I would say there isn't a high risk of them damaging the new motherboard.
But I would try to return the ram and say it didn't work in your notebook (which is true).

Yes, you should remove battery and unplug adapter, hold power button to dissipate as much current that may short out memory slots. Also, you have to be very careful when removing and replacing memory because the little plastic guides are fairly delicate on some motherboards. Either way you are going to likely need to replace the motherboard and the manufacturer will probably void your warranty.

Does it not boot even with the old RAM anymore?

removing the memory module might help (idk, just a guess) its unlikely that the notebook is dead though. I fitted new modules with the battery on. (of course the lappy was off). no problem there. maybe you touched the gold connectors or didn't ground yourself properly.

Just because you are able to successfully replace ram without unplugging adapter and battery does not mean there is no danger in doing it. You can play Russian roulette and not shoot yourself--eventually that bullet will be in the chamber.

look, if they wont fix it on warrenty then maybe you should just buy a new motherboard (or old motherboard from ebay) and replace it yourself.

But it depends on if you like your current notebook.

Did you make sure the memory modules are firmly seated and try powering up again?

+1 to both of these. If memory isn't seated properly your computer will stop at POST. I once didn't seat my CPU firmly enough and the same thing happened.

i already returned the notebook to the reseller who will ship it tomorrow to the manufacturer. About the warranty voided, let's see about that...

When i put back the old 1gb modules, the notebook still didnt want to work.. so that's why suspected something is really bad.

But yes, regarding my question: if i would get my notebook back repaired, can i just try out if the modules will work? Or can they be damaged now, and damage my notebook?

I don't think anyone wants to be the person to say "yes feel free to put some risky ram into a new mobo".

And I don't want to tell you that either.

But the truth is, I would try it.
Personally I believe that if the ram is bad, the notebook will not boot (it may turn on and give you a black screen and beep).

But remember to take the battery out this time, jks lol :D
