Hey guys, quick question. In my quest to find a new laptop, i've got some rather specific requirements (see here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/wha...-trackpad-kb-build-dgpu-such-thing-exist.html ), and my search isn't showing up very many options.... but if I drop the requirement for an IPS display, a few more options show up.

So, if I settle for a laptop that has a TN panel, is likely that you could buy an IPS panel and swap them? I've seen a few little guides here and there (ie one guy swapped the display in his HP DV6), putting in AUO panels.... so i'm guessing it's not out the realm of possibility?

Obviously it would void the warranty, but considering I was going to throw my own RAM/SSD in there anyways (and i'm not a stranger to PC hardware), i'd be fine with that.... shouldn't be hard to swap them back for warranty purposes anyways.

    So yea, thoughts?

    Thanks guys :)

You won't be able to switch out the TN with an IPS. They use different display cables, and the internal electronics won't be able to handle the 10-bit color dept (TN uses 8-bit, and the Intel GPU is limited to 8-bit....so Optimus and Enduro won't work).

If you require an IPS display for work purposes, your only option would be to buy a notebook with an IPS display (preferably a workstation laptop)...or get an external IPS display. Not sure if this is required for work, since it's not mentioned in your WNBSIB thread (however, if it is, I can't imagine why work won't buy it for you :p). If it's not required, Clevo-based laptops and the Thinkpad W520/W530's 1080p display are excellent TN panels that will put other TN panels to shame and come pretty close to IPS panels in terms of color quality (though not in viewing angles, obviously).

Hrm, alrighty then, that solves that mystery.

How come this guy was able to swap panels in his DV6: http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-...-hp-pavilion-dv6-6xxx-screen-replacement.html

and other people mention putting them in dells etc here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/ide...-b156hw01-v4-dual-channel-40-pin-cable-4.html

The AUO display used in the dv6 link is a TN panel, just a really good one (probably the same one used in the Clevos and Thinkpad W, iirc).

Ah, ok then, that makes a lot more sense.

So in that case, most laptops (assuming they've got the right cable) with TN panels should be compatible with the AUO panel then?

Because damn, a TN panel with 95% gamut/ntsc is a pretty good compromise if nothing with an IPS panel shows up.... especially as a second (portable) machine. Shame about the viewing angles as you pointed out, but i'm at a loss as to what else I could do.

Assuming that it's a 15.6" laptop, sure. Can't promise anything though since I've never replaced a display though.

True, but I couldn't think of any 15.6" IPS 8-bit panels, workstation or not.

15" IPS is really interesting because resellers offering 95% gamut screen upgrade(which should be the b156hw01 v4) on ASUS UX51VZ(which is IPS by default). When people get a hand on that, we may see if it is drop in, or those reseller remove proprietary part to do that.

    Probably go from a 50pin 10bit connection to a 40pin standard one.

You can't go the other way though if the motherboard does not support it.

Is that a 95% gamut IPS screen, or is the upgrade actually more of a trade-off (an SRGB IPS panel for an AdobeRGB TN panel)?

I have no idea, but my guess is so. 95%gamut doesn't worth the view angle you lose imo. If one have good reason to need accurate color on the go, may as well opt for those 10-bit panels.
