I am wanting to upgrade my dell inspiron 9400 due to not being able to initially afford the 7800 I had to buy it with the x1400 or some crap.

I have talked to a dell technical support and they have told me it is possible to do this upgrade and that my motherboard etc.. will be compatible.

I have no issues installing this myself and they have told me I will not void the warrenty (which I have recorded in writing)

The problem I am having is finding a supplier of this card, all the sites I can search only have the non-laptop versions or the 7800 gtx which I dont think is compatible.

Can anyone in the uk tell me where I can buy a laptop graphics card from as the suggested supplier through dell is very slow and not helping I am still waiting for them to return my call. I rang them and they said, we will ring you.

    Thanks in advance

Laptop graphics cards are not generally available in the open market. In any event, if eBay doesn't net you one you'll have to contact Dell. The cards are packaged in a Dell propreitary format, and they don't release those specs to others. Dell makes 'em, and Dell ships 'em. Try contacting their parts department.

Yeh I am currently going through their parts department, but I guess I could always look on Ebay later on. Finding their parts department aint too bothered in helping me with this atm, seems their suppliers of these parts are also not too bothered too. I'll get a call when dell parts gets a call from its suppliers who are probably waiting for a call from someone else.

I also looked on the Nvidia website and its registered suppliers under laptop GPU's came up as evesham? but the link to the product was dead and I found nothing except laptops (whole) and other goods on their site, no individual cards.

Oh well, I guess I will have to be patient or see what I can find on ebay.

    Thanks

As mentioned, only Dell has it, the only way you can find it is through Dell(or their warehouse depots), if not, then eBay or a 3rd party vendor who might just co-incidentally have one unused.

Is this true for all computer manufacturers? (i.e. difficult to do upgrades yourself).

    Upgrading?

If so, then yes. If not impossible. Dell has its own designed proprietary upgrading system, one unique for only their notebooks. For example, the e1505 can be had with the GMA950, 7300 and x1400, upgrading is a possibility if you own the 7300, as you just need to buy the x1400 from Dell.

However, other notebook companies do not have this, only some Clevo units, as well as ASUS units offer this. Best to check IceTea's MXM site.

A while back I noticed lots of Dell parts on ebay, so maybe the card you want can be had there.

Ok, update for you guys, and thank you for your previous support and suggestions.

I kept struggling with Dell parts and they put me through to 3 seperate approved suppliers of theres which only one got back to me last week with a quote over £200, though I may have considered this I had actually already won one off Ebay for £50. ^ thanks for that suggestion.

However I now have a new problem. The installation of the new graphics card though daunting at first was actually a peice of cake. I went in easy, re-assembled, booted fine, went to windows, installed Dells 7800go driver.

Probelm 1: during windows boot up I noticed a row or 7-8 retanglualr blocks of fuzzy pixels going accriss the centre of the screen each about an inch square seperated by an inch, strange. So I continued.

Problem 2: In windows the mouse seem to be a bit fuzzy with pixels around the mouse.

Problem 3: Videos would not display correctly in media player or VLCplayer (not a codec issue)

Problem 4: Excessive screen taring in WoW computer game.

I had done a complete format and reinstall of windows (it needed to be done anyways) I have upgraded the Bios to the newest version on dells site, I used the most upto date video driver specific to dell and the card I was using. I even tried after a few different drivers / cracked drivers to see if it would improve, to no avail. Obviously there are a lot of settings to alter with the 9800Go, I tried turning off all performance and improvements and rebooting but still no joy.

Obviously as it was not bought through Dell channels they will not offer any assistance.

Apart from the obvious fact that the card may be faulty does anyone have any other suggestions. Device manager says its fine and DxDiag shows no problems. Took everything apart and put in my old X1400 and everything is back to normal and working fine.

    Thanks in anticipation

Did you uninstall the old ATI 1400 drivers before you installed the new 7800GO drivers? If not uninstall what ever drivers you have now and put the 7800GO back in. Install new 7800 drivers. If this dosen't work, you probably got a bad 7800 from e-bay or the cooling system for the video card is not keeping the card cool enough to prevent artifacts.

Yes it was a fresh install windows and when prompted to install new software I cancelled it out, so there were no old drivers on the system, also no connection to the internet at that time.

I dont know if / how cooling could have been a problem it was only installed for 1 minute and I noticed the problems straight away, when booting windows in fact.

I just want to rule out all possibilities before I say that the card is faulty

Hello. I'm interested in upgrading my Dell Inspiron E1505 notebook video card, and it seems you've done it yourself. Did it work out for you?
