Nvidia just announced Max Q gpus for laptops.
A step forward for the thinness of gaming laptops, but we'll see on pricing and performance. They'll probably be underperforming versions of whatever card they are. I'm interested to see a 1080MQ vs a 1070N.

And by interested I mean I'll be pretty upset if the 1070 wins by a large margin and the 1080 is like 3 grand.

I think you've answered your question already. Because based on history, when it comes to performance especially in gaming laptops, you need proper cooling for the system to make an outstanding performance due to tweaks of CPU and GPU.
Just remember that "thin" is paperweight and the only advantage of this one is longevity of the battery usage, period. -
