First, I am looking to buy a new laptop. The choices for the one I'm looking at when customizing are the 128MB NVIDIA card and the 256MB NVIDIA® GeForce® 8600M GT card. I know the 256 is better, but how much better is it? How good is the 256 MB in general?

Also, is it easy to replace laptop batteries? (Random, but didn't feel another thread was necessary.) Specifically for the Dell XPS M1530?

Not knowing to much about the difference of the Graphic's card's, I can however reply on the Battery.

With the Dell laptop you have, you should just be able to simply go to the Dell website, and find your laptop, and order another Battery for it. Or maybe a local Computer store has some in stock, but IMO I would feel more comfortable ordering from the website itself.

And if you are still under Warranty, and if it's a problem you are having with the Battery, I believe the Warranty should cover the cost for a new one.

I just mean is it difficult to take an old battery out and put a new one in without damaging the computer in any way? I've never had to do it before, so please don't laugh too much at the noobish question... It was just something I was wondering.

I have an M1530 and it is really fast and easy to change batteries...just pull the lock and swap them out. There's no unscrewing anything or digging around your computer. As said above, to replace a battery, just order one off the website.

I went for the nine-cell and I can get over 5 hours of battery on a good day. My recommendation.

If you're planning on playing any new games with decent settings, go for the 8600M GT. It's got more on the 8400M than just memory. If you aren't the gaming type, if you just want to play older games, or if you don't use 3D programs very often, save your money.

The amount of memory a card has does not solely dictate how good a card is. If a card is too slow then giving it 5million gigs of memory wouldn't make a difference. In this case, it is correct though, the 8600GT is the far superior card. It will play any game around on at least medium.

Replacing the battery in most laptops is easy, I do it every day on my D420. Simply a matter of pulling one out and putting another in for the Latitudes and I assume the XPS is the same (I shall check with a friend of mine who is coming over today and owns an M1530).

No laughs here, we have all been there, especially me! Now I don't know how your computer is set up, but this is the basic run down how I do it on mine.

    - Close lid
-Turn it over, so the top is now the bottom
-The battery is located on the top edge
    - I slide one unlock button over
    - Slide the second one, and hold it in that position
    - Pull the battery out horizontally
    - Slide a new one in, making sure to match up the outlets (where the battery connects to the laptop when you put it in)
    - Lock it back up, and that's it

Now please remember, you Laptop could be slightly different, completley different, or exactly the same, it all depends on the computer.

But in short...no, it should not be hard at all.

Taking the battery out is as simple as 1-2-3. Their is a small lever, push/slide it and out comes the battery. Then pop in another battery.

The 8600Gt is much more powerful than the 8400GS. Probably more than 2x as powerful. The upgrade to the 8600 is not that much, so I would recommend getting the more powerful graphics card. It will game and have more responsive video feedback than the 8400.
