So currently I have a brand new 8940G 6865 with a Core i7 720QM. I was wondering if there are any softwares that'll allow me to tinker with the CPU? I'm currently using nTune for the GPU, which is not a great software, but not many others work with the GTS 250m I'm using.
First and foremost I want to do a little undervolting. It seems there are many benefits to doing that and I'm tempted to try it. This CPU idles at around 54oC for me and at load, it shoots up to around 84oC (that was with Prime95). And due to its design most of the heat is felt where you left hand rest on the machine. Pretty inconvenient for gaming.
Any ideas?

CPUgenie will work but problem is that it has a 30 day trial so you have to buy that software... It is the only one which works with core i7 processors..
-
I tried CPUGenie and it took 10 seconds for a crash to happen. Don't wanna try that again yet. None others? That suck
-

Try CPUGenie with different settings maybe?
-
If it crashed, then maybe you went too high/low.
-
Nope. I used the auto tuning thing, and CPUGenie detected my 1.6GHz clock as being 6x, while it's 12 I think. So maybe the detection is screwed up.
-
I've never used CPUGenie. If it's anything like Clockgen or SetFSB you should be able to find the clock generator, although I don't know whether i7 notebooks will have a PLL. Only the right clock generator will work.

CPUGenie is more like rmclock and crystalcpuid. It doesn't do anything with the fsb. -
Oh ok. So it doesn't do anything to do with overclocking?
-

nope. It would be cool if it did. -
u should do it manually... just change the voltages of the max and min and SLFM multipliers...

Well, acer isn't well known for their laptop bios. There are NO extra options on the Aspire 8940G 6865 bios except the very basic things such as boot order, system time/date and bios password. No messing about with the processor or anything. Can't even turn HT off or SpeedStep off.
-
You can't be serious? Even my limited Toshiba BIOS has the ability to turn on Virtual Mode, Speedstep, specify whether to use one or two cores. That's crap.
And since you mention OC in the topic title, then I assumed CPUGenie did have something to do with it. Seems I was wrong.
Anyway, what are you going to use to overclock? -
SetFSB is one that might work but it doesn't support Core i7 laptops... that's why i want a laptop with core i7-975 desktop processor at least so it's easy to OC...
-
Hehe, all you need is the Clevo D900F/Sager NP9280...
Pity it looks like a paving slab. -
Originally I tried to use CPUGenie to try and undervolt my 720QM. Sadly, it doesn't even detect the darn thing properly and crashed. So now I'm left with no options.
Any1 successfully used CPUGenie to UV a 720QM? -
lol i don't care about the design... it's the stuff inside... anyways i'll need to reduce my book load to carry this around in school..
-
Lol. Trying to lug a 18.4", 4.5kg beast with accessories around school. I feel like I'm losing centimeters of my height carrying the damn thing
-
4.5 kg? That's a lightweight, especially for a 18.4".
-
I think you might need to wait until the developers for RMClock include support for the Core i7.
-
RmClock has been dead for 2 years now.
-
It has? Oh well, I guess we shall have to wait until there are more programs that support it PROPERLY, unlike CPUGenie.
