I'm thinking of getting the new OCZ Apex SSD 60gb for my new Lenovo T500.

My aim is to run couple of VMWare VM which consumes alot of resources.

Will the SSD drive improve the performance over my 320gb 5400rpm.

I'm not thinking of buying the SSD for speed boot up time, just to rum VM.

My friend advised me not to buy it that it degenerates quickly. Is it true?

you have a nice friend, he read the press.

    no it's not really true.

but yes it would help for vms. but be aware that you won't have much space on it for the vms.. but as it helps for booting, it helps for booting/loading/restoring etc of a vm just the same way.

I'm planning to use the 320gb 5400 in the Ultrabay as my second drive to store my VMs and use the 60gb SSD for Vista and Programs

it would be awesome to store the vm's on it, too. (and that was what I talked about..). else, the vms don't gain from it at all (except for faster paging performance once ram is out).

Consider the OCZ Vertex, Intel, Samsung, or Super Talent ME. The Apex uses dual Jmicrons I believe.

yep, steer clear of jmicron based products. Intel, Vertex, Samsung and ultradrive ME are the only ones I'd buy.

Well more precisely, Intel, Indilinx, and Samsung are the only controllers you should be looking for, as Corsair, Kingston, OCZ, SuperTalent, and others all sell various drives with those controllers, and all are worth a purchase.

So any 2.5" SATA II SSD will work? Where does this get installed in the notebook?

I am looking at getting a 32gb OCZ Vertex as well.

Try creating your own thread next time or posting in the SSD thread. SSD upgrades are as easy as any other HDD upgrade, just unplug the HDD and replace w/ SSD.

Why would I create a new thread of something that was already posted?

Anyways, I don't want to unplug my HDD that is why I am asking. I want the HDD + SSD. It as an option when building my T500 which is why I am curious.

Usually it's better to post specifically in the notebook subforum, but in this case it doesn't make much difference. You have to remove your optical drive if you want to use both drives.

I'd leave your 320GB where it is and put the SSD in the ultra bay, use it for programs and VM's. but I'd grab a Intel M-25x 80GB, OCZ vertex, Crucial M225 etc...

by the way the Ultra-bay runs at full SATA II speed so there shouldn't be a speed reduction.

So you don't need to use the optical space? Not familiar with the ultra-bay. Sorry new to laptop modifications.

I am definitely looking into the OCZ Vertex.

The UltraBay holds the ODD. You still have to replace it.

Ohhh I see, so you just take the UltraBay out and you can insert the SSD into the ultra bay adapter?

Thanks again by the way. I think your avatar is awesome, I have added it to my facebook profile lol.
