I was looking at some SSDs on eBay and saw one of these:

    Link

I was just wondering if these were any good? I haven't been paying too close attention to SSDs as they were too rich for me, but these seemed fairly reasonable. I don't need a lot of space on my notebook, but wouldn't mid some extra oomph. I just don't want to get a lemon. Thanks for any help.

Yeah I heard they are the best bang of the buck, they are pretty good if you ask me, if you are wondering about data rates or overall performance then ask Les about them.

I would guess you are looking at the 64gb model.

If Les were around, he'd learn you right well =D

Les is probably the expert here, if you get a chance, perhaps I'd PM him about it.

I have the more expensive OCZ 64 GB SSD and I can tell you that drive rocks. I have it in my T61 and it's one silent notebook. The core series drives are not made by OCZ but from Ritek, OCZ just re badge them as their own. I bought the Ritek 128 GB SSD from allstarshop and I ran ATTO Disk bench on it and the writes were about 80 MB/s and the read was about 115 MB/s.

I forgot to mention that the more expensive OCZ drives are rebadged Samsung drives(Thanks John for pointing out my mistake).

Thanks for the replies. I found a pretty detailed review here. The only thing that gives me pause was it said the response times were a little slower than other SSDs, though I'm sure it's still faster than what I got now. The Seagate drive I have now is really quiet. I don't know that a SSD would be be much better, but I'd like a performance boost now that I'm running Vista. I could put XP or Linux back on and have it really fly.

I am also looking into the core series, but I feel that the ssd market is in shambles now, cause the other manufacturers need to find a way to compete price wise with the core series. I expect that competition will increase and samsung, supertalent, m-tron, memoright and samsung are going to jump on the lower priced bandwagon too. I dont know when, but it has to be soon, cause the ocz ones cost like 1/10th of other ssd's and no one in their right mind will buy a $1500 ssd from another manufacturer if the ocz ones are less than $500 for even 128gb.

The pricings should go down soon, and I am probably going to wait to December or so before I upgrade my 7k200 array.

Yes, I feel the prices and the controller technology is in a kind of free fall now. Look how fast thumb drives fell once the prices started coming down.

So, as much as I want a SSD for my main computer, I am going to wait.

I thank OCZ for making these affordable, or at least darn close to it :)

There is no technical reason that it wouldn't.

The SSD will be dead silent since it has no moving parts.

Yes they are good. They're not as fast as the best SSDs but they're a lot cheaper. They will outperform any traditional drive in real life settings.

    Here's another review:
    http://blog.laptopmag.com/ocz-core-series-affordable-ssd-hands-on

You can get the OCZ Core 64GB for $270

These are SATA drives, are you saying they could work on a PATA interface with an adaptor?

Perhaps just what I needed to push me over the edge. Thanks.

I did see the other review. I may wait for a bit to see how the full review comes in. Since the price war is on, things will only get better.

Where do you see it for $270? The best I saw was $285 on NewEgg not including the rebate, but they had no stock. Otherwise I was looking at about $290 on eBay. Hopefully I can shag about $50 for the old drive.

0.35ms compared to 0.1ms is a little slower yes, but still many times faster than the 8ms -> 35ms from harddrives.. 20x to 100x faster.. :)

    shouldn't bother you, no :)

Well I bought one eBay anyway. I was able to use the 25% cashback from Live.com, making it $220 after I get that back. That plus there's a $40 rebate on the unit and I can sell my old drive. That should generate some money since it's a 7200RPM drive. Probably cost me $125-150 after it's all said and done. I'd say that's worth it for the performance boost. I will post scans when I get it, hopefully next week.
