I currently have an Inspiron 1520 for about 2 years with a 160Gb 7200RPM hard drive. Do you think that the following SSD hard drive would be worth the upgrade? ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227393). Would I experience a significant speed increase for the cost? Also, how would I install this hard drive (just pop it out and place the new one in?)
I currently have 4Gb of RAM so I've maxed out that component and want another upgrade before grad school (next year) to extend the life of my laptop a bit.
Any and all comments are greatly appreciated!

Can't see that link to the SSD you want. (newegg is probably out of stock and it doesn't show).
Any SSD would increase the performance of that 'old' HD, but then, so would a new Hitachi 7K500 too. What would you need to do with this system?

Sorry about that! Just going to be using this computer for some numerical work (like MATLAB and Maple), programming, and just general use. It's starting to feel a bit slow and was wondering if this would do the trick!
Thanks! -

Hmmm... How big of an installation is MATLAB and Maple?
30GB is way too small for me: Win 7 x64 by itself is way over 20GB (I have 8GB RAM so pagefile and hibernation files are bigger).
Keep in mind that you want to keep at least 30% free (unused) space on an SSD to enjoy it's maximum (or close) speeds.
For a 30GB SSD you have an effective 20GB of 'real' space.
(30x1,000,000/1024/1024x0.7= 20GB).

If processing speed is lacking, try an overclock as described for an Inspiron 1525 here, massaging the OC Toolkit to make a transparent process.

i would get a 60GB SSD at least... 30GB is just too small... if u can't afford an SSD , get the 500GB Hitachi 7K500... its way faster than most hard drives so it would be an improvement but not a great improvement... for SSD's , i recommend intel G2 SSD with TRIM and windows 7.

Thank you all for your replies. I thought I had put up a 60Gb version, I guess I didn't. Can someone tell me how to install this HD, is it just as easy as popping out the old one and putting in the new one?

yep, it's that easy
