An interesting run through of cheap desktop system and what was uncovered in the balance of saving $ doing a prebuilt vs component build + seeing how the 75w PCIE only models of GPU's perform in trying to update such power limited systems later. Side benefit, as built system limits power to CPU leaving performance on the table.

What they are doing with tweaking gpu's slightly to give it another name to market (recycling the same hardware) reminds me of how it is in the RAM sector as well... There are a lot of RAM that were marketed as 4266 for example that can't post 4266, which makes me think that the memory chip used in those upper frequency lines are all pretty much the same thing.... It's hard to say if they really do binned them or not, because most of the high speed RAM that I have need really good cooling and higher voltage just to maintain the advertised speeds.

With GPU's...it's even more of a mess eh... just crazy...

The sad thing is, as long as people are paying for the marketing hype, they'll all continue to laugh all the way to the bank...

Therefore, brining awareness is key like what hardware unboxed and others are doing... there are very few utoob reviewers who aren't incentivized and tell it how it is... for that, super grateful.

in principle i agree with you, although RAM is veeeeery finicky and is not just bound by the chips on the DIMMs, but also the CPU IMC, the motherboard traces, temperature, voltage... you can only start criticizing not being able to reach advertized speeds if you use the exact same hardware config the manufacturer used to validate the DIMMs and it still wouldn't work!

 

That's true... there are a lot of variables for sure, but certain RAM brands don't use as good of binned chips as companies like G.Skill uses in their newer line as their upper line is all hand picked Samsung B-Die 100%. I've been buying up RAM like crazy with them being around an all time low lately... I don't go into the low to mid range RAM expecting any miracles. - However, with guarenteed B-Die RAM, I expect it to perform at minimum at +/- 100 or so of it's advertised speed..

RAM is a tricky animal... I've spent days tuning my 4266 G.Skill TridentZ sticks... Now I'll be doing the same shortly with my 4600 G.Skill sticks ...

Right now is the time to buy up B-Die RAM due to Samsung decreasing production here soon...
