Is it alright to leave a laptop on for hours like a desktop? Say...for 24-48 hours at a time?

I leave mine on 24/7/365. Don't worry about leaving it on all the time, it is designed to run.
-
just make sure you don't close the lid and disable standby
-
I ran my notebook several days sometimes w/o shutting it down.

I wouldn't recommend keeping it on all the if it is on your bed, it gets very very hot.

Someone should make a sticky on this (that most people have no trouble leaving there laptop on, for severarl hours or all the time). Alot of people as that question (I know I did once, just to see what other people's views were on it).

When not in operation, I close it, it goes into standby, and quietly sits there till the next usage period....

IF its on a flat surface such as desktop then its fine, but be wary of leaving it on beds, sofas, cushions, tummys etc.

My laptop has been running nearly constantly since 19 jan 2006, minus suspend while travelling.
-
dont see why leaving it running might be a problem. as long as heat isnt an issue, you should be able to run it all the time (granted that its plugged in)

To test your laptops for running for hour is to install a PC Mark05,06. It will take a longer time to test all your features the laptop has. It can test the video, hard drive, memory, cpu,...... everything, seems to be a good choice.

Well yes. If your laptop seems to get very hot, you can always buy a laptop cooling pad which you simply pop underneath your notebook. you can pick one up pretty cheap. The Targus Chillmat is a good one:

You could also close the lid when you are not using your notebook. Normally, your notebook would go into Stand By Mode. To prevent this happening, right click on your desktop, and go to the Screen Saver tab. Click Power and anmd in the new window that comes up, click the Adavnced tab. Underneath the heading: When I close the lod of my laptop, select "Do nothing" from the drop down menu and click apply.
Doing this will switch off the monitor when you close the lid but keep the programs running. -
i bought my i6000 in march '05. since then it has pretty much been on 24/7... off only when it's in the car going someplace.
as long as you keep it cool and dust-free, you'll have no problems. -
Mine run 24/7/365 crunching at full load. No issues.
-
how did you get yours to run at full load at .962V
-
I didn't do anything special. Its just one of those good chips. -
ah i just realized that you have both a w7j and a z62f with 2400s
-
Eventually, it will get slower .. but other than that .. nothing to worry. I rarely leave running for more than two days.

When you finally hit Windows' virtual memory meaningfully, the sytem will never recover from it. Keeps the oddest things swapped out to disk, until you reboot. At least that's what I'd guess he's talking about...

Why is everyone recommending standby? Wouldn't it be wiser/safer/more cost-effective to put it into hibernation?
OK to run laptops for hours?
