Just running a stress test on my CPU as i need to undervolt, but whilst running HWMonitor after the temps have reached 98c, they sometimes dropped to -26c (pic below). Is this a fault in the software is something more serious going wrong. Hope i'm being paranoid.

Also, the temps have hit 100c on both cores and the laptop hasn't shutdown, I thought after hitting 100c the thing shut shutdown to protect itself, or does it have to be at a sustained period at this temp before it does this.

    Cheers

    Edit: CPU is T7500.

Try use other software monitors to check your temps. Everest is a pretty good one. The temps you currently have showing on CPUID is most likely wrong ;)

Yes, its definetly a false reading.

Try using CoreTemp and Hardware Sensors Monitor.

I'm running HWmonitor, Everest, CoreTemp and Hardware Sensors Monitor, they are all reporting the same temp.

I've just opened the laptop, cleaned the fan area etc, put new thermal paste on and the temps have come down to about 91c, but they definatley hit dangerously high levels as bits of melted brittle plastic fell out. What worries me is the computer never shutdown when the temps hit 100c.

    Hi.

What core2duo processor do you have, as they are rated to 100c+ , but we need to model number to find the exact temp.

    Regards

    John.

I guess it is possible that it is that hot.But thats really bad and dangerous.

    Get a cooler and undervolt.

    Hi.

The max temp for the T7500 is 100c , It should start to throttle back as it get`s near it`s max temp at least.

    Regards

    John.

Thats good, but the max temp (100c) is still way too hot.

Again, i recommend a cooler and undervolting

I personally advise you return it if you can and if they won't take it, demand a warranty exchange with a product that doesn't hit 100C. Especially since it's literally melting your plastic, but I wouldn't tell them you opened the case since you probably won't get a return/warranty that way.

What brand and model is it?

It's an Acer Aspire 5920. I'll get some Artic Silver within the next week and undervolt today but i'll just keep an eye on it, see if there's any problems.

Still a bit worried about the -26c, but hopefully that was a software error. One thing that I thought (not sure how far off the mark this is) but maybe the sensors in the cpu are damaged????

I presume you do know that software screw up when accessing the ACPI on some Gemstones. Its the main reason why temps are weird. There's nothing wrong with the H/W.

I see the problem. You need to raise the temperature in your house.

Its imposible for the CPU to be running and at -26c

    That is a software error.

Also, doews the laptop feel hot to the touch? If not, the 91c could be an error as well.

If there's melted plastic though that would seem to confirm the high temps at least.

Also, Artic Silver is a thing of the past, buy Tuniq TX-2 instead. It's cheaper, produces lower temperatures, and best of all it's non-conductive so you have no chance of frying your components. Google around for some tech comparisons.

Try out RealTemp and Nvidia System Monitor as well.

If you check out the Release Notes for the BIOS updates, there are fixes relating to thermal control.

Also, Acer seems to have screwed up in the documentation as well. Check out the fan table. :p

    Fan Table.PNG

Anyway, 95*C is the max listed temp, so notebook should shut down at anything above 95*C. And try making out the temps, from the Fan RPM and noise.

I also have the T7500. Used to run 90+ before undervolting. I will post a screen of my specs. It runs stable while doing heavy gaming so you can trust me on this one. The CPU will stay at 1.2ghz due to the voltage setup, lower power consumption, same performance. [IMG]

If it shut off at 100°C it would be very bad for it. If it shut off it would just sit there with the super hot heatsink and cook vs if you let it run it would throttle down to cool it off. My dv6500t has a max temperature of 120°C and i have made it reach it before it shuts off but its near impossible to reach it you have to try to reach it to get that hot.

    ^^^^^

Why would you try to make it reach 120C ????

Im suprised that a dv6500 would get that hot, they generally run pretty cool.

OT :D: One time my GPU went up to 124C
---I was playing a high graphiccs game, paused to go eat dinner and stupidly placed the notebook on he bed... right side up. Got back in and RivaTuner OSD said 124C, i flipped out and shut down. :D

Cheers for the help guys. I see what you mean with the chart Andy, anyhow easyone to figure out through. I've listened to the fan, and can sort of work out the temps from the chart, also had a quick look through the bios release notes, there are some bits about the thermal table etc, I updated to the latest one when I got the laptop so any issues should have been corrected by this a while ago.

a7x2thedeath, thanks for the voltages, i'll have a look at that, although each CPU voltage can be different even when it's the same CPU it will give me a good idea.
