Sorry if it's a dumb question, but I'm getting a notebook with an optical drive for the first time, and so I'm wondering if there's any risk of scratching a dvd by moving the notebook around, or even tilting it at an angle or turning it upside down. What about if it's shaken around for example when driving on a bumpy road? Also, is it bad to leave a disc in the drive while traveling with the notebook?

    Thanks.

Do you have a drive with a slot load mechanism or tray?

For the tray type... you clip the disc in and lock it into place. You should have no issues for normal movements with your notebook. If you decide to turn it upside down, I don't about that..

For slot loading type... I'm not sure how the disc is handled inside, but I would also it is locked into place while it is being read. Needless to say, drastic movements are probably not a good idea. If you wanna move the notebook from A to B... not a prob at all.

(From personal experience w/ those two types of drive)

It should be fine in most cases. to be safe, take em out. But most laptop drives secure the DVD in place using the spindle mechanism, rather than the tray mechanism like most desktop drives, making them more secure.

I think you are more likely to damage your hard drive than a DVD if you shake your notebook (as in category 10 earthquake shaking).

I would imagine that the manufacturer thought of this beforehand by having a locking mechanism (after all, if the disc is moving, the computer can't read it properly), but I could be wrong.

The optical drive in a laptop is no worse than the Sony Walkmans of old. You know the ones, flip up lid, strap it to your arm and go jogging with and it wouldn't skip???

Like Bio said, you need to worry more about the Hard drive than anything else considering that if the head is down reading or writing, it can cause damage. Not that big of a deal though now considering that cushions that are on all four corners of the drive, and the fact that most notebooks and HDs have features on them that when the system detects jarring motions, it puts the HD into safe mode pulling the head away from the disk to preven damage.

Well, the laptop drives so spin a lot faster than in the walkmans.

It's ok to move it, but only gently without jostling it.

I wouldn't subject a runnning laptop to the same shock as running with a CD walkman.

I turned my laptop upside down once with a DVD inside. It made some kind of scratching noise so I immediately turned it right side up. Surprisingly, when I took out the DVD I didn't see any noticeable stratches that weren't there to begin with. Still, that noise WAS quite loud.....Don't do it.

I think it should be fine. My m1530's slot-loading drive doesn't get affected while there's a spinning disc with movement. In fact, I used to keep discs inside my optical drive the whole day while travelling when I play games that require the disc (I prefer bringing the disc than imaging them).

Then again, notebooks aren't all shock-proof (except rugged/toughbooks), so I wouldn't go as far as running/jogging with a disc in my notebook.

    Seriously? <-Fixed

    Talk about sensitive :D.

Either that is a protection mechanism or it is malfunctioning.

Remember.. Laptops have hard-drives which are running all the time.* I would be more concerned about that.

Yeah, I would rather ruin a DVD than a hard-disk any day.

Wouldn't recommend it if you are burning something...

Was moving my Acer Aspire 5634 around a bit when burning a DVD and it failed a few times until I set it down on a flat surface.

    This isin't true.

If you have a DVD in your tray and flip your notebook upside down you'll hear the DVD will some kind of scrach. And I would so say for the 'bumpy roads' that the DVD will some kind of scrach or hit the tray itself.. However, this thread is from 2009, so I think we should let it goo..
