Have an old laptop asus u45jc-a1. I haven't used this laptop in a while since its i3-370m processor and thus slow for what i do. Well i recently powered up this laptop and then put the charger in it...

I get 0% available, plugged in, charging. Basically that means the moment i unplug the charger, the laptop immediately shuts down. Thus even if it has a few minutes, that would be okay. I had bought a replacement charger on ebay a while back for pretty cheap, it was under 20 dollars i recalled. It worked for a while but i never really used this laptop but got charger mainly because well the asus laptop still works and thus just get a replacement charger.

Does this mean my charger doesn't work? Or could it be possibly the battery? Thanks.

Sounds like a dead battery. Have you checked the battery wear level using hwmonitor or hwinfo?

    Dead / defective battery.

Since you're asking this question, I'm assuming that the laptop battery in there is original. And if it is original, then that's a 6-year old battery you're using. If using the laptop on battery is really important, then buy a replacement battery, and that should do the trick.

The battery is original. I did recall i had to buy a charger replacement since the old one didn't work anymore. I haven't even turned on this asus laptop in a long time... and thus got this message. So i'm wondering if it could be the charger.

So if i want to check if my battery is no good, i download hwmonitor? How do i know if battery is bad then?

If the laptop works when plugged in it's probably not the charger.

Well, you can test if the battery is bad by trying to charge the laptop.

If it reports as 0% available, plugged in, charging; and if the laptop immediately shuts down when you unplug the charger; then the battery is defective. Sound familiar? :)

But seriously.... the fact that the laptop detects a battery at all (shows 0%, instead of "No Battery"); and the fact that it TRIES to charge, but never gets above 0%; means that the battery is recognized by the machine, and the battery is most likely defective. It makes total sense for a 6+ year old battery.

If the battery wasn't detected at all by the laptop, then it could possibly be a defective connection / socket / interface between the laptop and battery. But since the battery is recognized by the laptop, then you know that this isn't the case.

What seems to have happened here is that the battery fell (far) below what the internal circuitry allows for it to be allowed to charge again. The cells may/might still be good.

You can take it to a battery technician and see if they can jump start the cells to allow charging, but if they charge more than a few dollars, it may be wasted $$.

The platform that you have doesn't warrant buying a new battery (official Asus), imo. But it may be worth something for someone else to do so with it. ;)

i downloaded hwinfo64. . When i went to battery, it shows battery number 0 and shows

    Designed capacity 84000 mwh
    full charged capacity 61815 mwh
    wear level 26.4%

power status critical on ac power
    current capacity 0 mwh
    current voltage 5.908v

26% doesn't seem right for such an old battery but sometimes these readings may not be accurate. However, the voltage rating is way too low so the battery may still be defective or it is not being charged properly either due to a defective/dead battery or an incorrect or defective power adapter.

Can you post the power rating markings located on your laptop and the power rating markings located on the power adapter you are using? There should be a sticker in the battery compartment that lists the input voltage and amperage. The power adapter should also have a sticker listing the output voltage and amperage.
