My dads old laptop is dead, its either the lcd which isnt so bad or a bricked motherboard which is pretty bad.
Anyway, not gonna get it fixed but we wanted to salvage some of the data from the hard drive in the laptop. I tried putting the hard drive into my other laptop and booting it up from there and checking if it worked, and it wouldn't. Windows wouldn't boot due to a change in hardware config. So can i just use it as an external then? If i bought an enclosure for example, could i just plug it into a usb port and it should work like a regular external or would there be some problems with that too?
Thanks

Alright thanks, dont have a desktop lol so i guess ill have to get a cheap enclosure then.
One more (stupid) question, how do i tell if my drive is a SATA or IDE? -
Tsunade_Hime such bacon. wow
If it's NTFS file system, you need to change the owner and strip permissions on the Users/Documents and Settings folder. Otherwise backing up the data will fail. Only XP Pro/Vista/7 can do this.

Well the OS on the old HD was windows 7, so should that be a problem?
We are also backing up on a windows 7 based system.
@Forge, thanks, I will compare it to the pics. -

Not at all. It's treated as an external. The OS files are just more random data as far as your computer will be concerned.
Old hard drive - how can i get the data back?
