So I have a Seagate 7200.1 100GB 7200rpm running in my Thinkpad, I was interested in upgrading to a newer 5400rpm 250/320GB hard disk.

I don't need the capacity but just wanted to know if there would be an increase in actual everyday performance because of the increased density even though its at a slower rpm?

The newer 5400RPM drives will be faster than your old 7200.1.

I doubt there will be a noticeable different in day to day usage though in benchmarks Soviet is correct.

Why not just go for a newer generation 7200RPM @ 160GB. These can be had for the same price.

Because a single platter Hitachi 7K320 (160gb) is faster than the seagate momentus 7200.4 at 500gb

What model laptop do you have?
If you have a SATA based laptop drive, than you have a wide range when it comes to an upgrade.
If you have a PATA drive, there arent so many choices.

Hmmm... How much slower Momentus is? 1 sec slower OS boot? Sacrifice 340GB of space for 1 sec less boottime? I've got Asus N10Jh netbook, even though Asus doesn't call it netbook.

It will be very hard (impossible) to notice any difference between Seagate 7200.4 and Hitachi 7K320.
