SO I got a great deal on a brand new MPC Micron Transport T2400 w/ Core 2 Duo T5500 / X1600 128mb and I put my 320gb 7200rpm with 4gb ram into it, and am running some benchmarks. Doom 3 ran at ultra over 30fps and high around 60. 3dmark05 was 3600. D/ling L4D2 now...

problem is it's an older model laptop so I'm scared to put anything other than XP on it to ensure the drivers work.

I really don't care about having highest graphics on the laptop (that's what a desktop is for), I just want to enjoy Ut2004, CS:S, etc, and I want to use Photoshop CS5, map with Source engine, and possibly some modeling.

Since I got such a good deal on this, I'm considering selling it as brand new and looking at similar priced newer model. Do you think a lower end new laptop with a Mobility Radeon 3200, 4200, 4225 etc, with dx10, and slightly better battery life would be an upgrade?

You can install Vista on that; perhaps 7 if you really wanted.
Latest graphics driver seems to be Catalyst 10.2

According to notebookcheck, the x1600 seems to be a slightly better performer than the 4225. The 4225 might have lower power consmption/run cooler than the x1600. Pretty much any modern mid range graphics card will blow the x1600 out of the water.

If battery life is important to you, depending on your budget, you might be able to get something with 5+ hours of runtime that performs roughly the same or with worse graphics card.
