I had planned to use OneDrive as my 'My Documents' folder, not making the files available offline to safe space, and running Windows 8.1 since pointer functionality is removed in Windows 10. I am concerned that the process might be taxing on the SSD's finite number of writes.

The thought is that the writes won't take place until I actually had to download the document and edit it. Or would viewing the documents via the pointers actually trigger a write as well?

Out of 7 consumer ssd`s in an long term constant write test, 5 lasted over 200TB of writes and 2 lasted over 2PB of writes, So i would not worry.

The free reg clean i have linked below, has an Windows optimization section and it can turn off a number of setting that write to your ssd.

If you still want to reduce your ssd writes try the free app below.

I have used the app for a couple of months on Win10 and run the reg cleaner and defraged the reg file and run all the optimizations, and i have not had any errors, but the app does an registry and makes a restore point.

Don't be. Unless you are writing tens upon hundreds of gigabytes to the drive on a very regular basis, you will have moved on to something better long before you even come close to wearing out your current one.

Yeah, leave trim enabled or your ssd will get slower and slower.

Yeah and even that is becoming obsolete!

SSD's are gods blessing from above, getting cheaper and better day by day.

Yeah, garbage collection routines are getting smarter and more aggressive. But TRIM is still important especially if you continually tax your SSD.
