It looks as though Apple's Powerbooks and Macbook Pros are the only notebooks that have backlit screens or am I wrong?
-
i think your title had it right... i believe all laptop screens are backlit =P
But i cant think of any other manufacturer with a back lit keyboard. -

I never understood that feature. Why would I want a back lit keyboard? I never look at the keys when I am typing, why would it matter if they are lit up? I could type in complete darkness.
-
I'm right there with you Homer Jay... can't think why I would need that "feature".
-
Honestly, I turned that feature off immediately and permanently in OSX. Also, it's kind of annoying in Vista because the brightness controls are not complete; I have to manually turn it off each time (although it only takes the keystroke fn + F8).
-
Hmm, there were some concept laptops at CES and Computex that had them, but other than that, the MBP is it.
Seems like a nice feature to have. If you type in the dark, its really easy to make mistakes. -

I only type 25-35 words a minute, which not not a big deal considering a professional journalist or other profession that spends all day on a keyboard can break 90 words a minute. However, even I know where every key is located and it would take too much time to look at the keys while typing anyways. It is a nice gimmick, but I would never use it.
-
Vivek, if you are able to touch type then you don't need to look at your keyboard, na? Just like I'm doing now.
-
Yeah... they may as well take the markings off all the keys too.
-
Hmm... actually that's not a bad idea. Prevents snoopers from trying to guess your password just by looking at you typing it. That's a security feature right there!! Get a patent! Quick!

It probably would not work. It is one of those psychology things. The person looking at the keyboard will probably fill in the gaps subconsciously. -
I don't care or need the feature, I was just curious, thats all.
-
well some of us do look at the keys from time to time. Especially since my main keyboard is a standard one for a desktop, when i switch to laptop use the smaller keyboard, flatter keys, and less key travel is somethign I am not as use to and I tend to look down at the keys more often since I don't get the tactile feel of a desktop keyboard and often make more typos. Also since the layout is difference when I need keys such as ctrl, Fn, delete, or the numberpad, and media keys, I need to look at it and int he dark a backlit keyboard can be very handy on a laptop.
-
I would be in real trouble then. I'm okay with the letters, but not the rest. And I would love to have a lighted keyboard. Don't ask me how I ended up with a 97% for a final grade in typing. Teacher's pet, I guess.

Seems like someone thought of that already

It's a 'cool' thing, but thats about it. It could be useful in some situations, but a USB light is inexpensive and can do the same thing.
-
its just a novelty like fingerprint readers, lightscribe, game flashers etc. Cool for 2 days then only used for showing other people... 'hey look what this thing has got'... big deal.
Only Apple has backlit keyboards?
