So here's what happened. I originally had an OCZ Vertex 2 120gb in my laptop. I found this wasn't enough space, so around April I upgraded to the 240gb version.

However, two months later it would not be detected in the laptop, or as an external drive. I RMA'ed it and used the new one with no issues.

Just a few days ago, about four to five months after I RMA'ed it, the same symptoms occured. Now I'm RMA'ing it again. Now to the situation at hand:

After this, I'm second guessing the reliability of this drive. Maybe it won't happen again, but I'm admittedly getting a bit fed up with this. I would rather it not happen when I need it at school or when I'm out of town.

I have an Intel 320 160gb in my main PC for games. I'm thinking of putting this in my laptop, then using the 240gb in my main for games instead. If it happens again, it won't be much of an issue to have it RMA'ed since it wouldn't be the primary drive.

The one thing I'm worred about is the space. If 120gb wasn't enough, then I question whether 160gb will be. The jump from 240gb to 160gb is pretty significant. Maybe it was just bad luck? However, Intel's track record is much better so I'm already quite tempted.

I'm just wondering if anyone has had any experience with these drives, and what I should do.

    Thanks.

The Vertex drives, and all Sandforce-controller SSDs are known for this random failure a few months in. This year the Vertex 3 was an even bigger fiasco than the Vertex 2, and a lot of people finally figured out that Sandforce didn't have a clue what they were really doing...they rush their fast but unstable controllers to market with little testing. Unlike Intel/Samsung/Crucial who are all known for their reliability and still plenty fast too.

I'd suggest running away from that Sandforce drive as fast as you can...you've already seen it's trustworthiness. Like I said, your experience is FAR from rare, despite what OCZ might try to tell you.

Figured as much - been reading around and it seems that OCZ's reliability isn't so good now. It didn't seem so bad when I bought the drive.

Starting to wish I had invested in a different brand - maybe an M4 256gb or something. Oh well, as long as I use the OCZ as secondary storage it shouldn't be too bad.

It's not just OCZ either. All SSDs using that Sandforce Controller (such as the Corsair Force drives) have the same troubles. It's 90% the fault of Sandforce, 10% the fault of those companies for using them without proper testing.

The Vertex 2's reviews were decent a year ago, but since then Sandforce bungled up their next gen drives so bad that people finally found out that Sandforce=cross your fingers. Also, after a few months people started having drive failures.
