I just got my ODD caddy to mount a 2.5" SATA SSD or HDD. I plan on putting both an OCZ Vertex 2 and Momentus XT in the laptop. The SSD OCZ Vertex 2 will be my boot drive and Momentus XT will be the game / storage drive.

Question though, should it matter if I use the existing SATA port designed for the HDD for the boot drive (SSD) or doesn't it matter?

Typically the ODD is the secondary SATA connection, so it'll default to trying to boot off of the internal hard drive first. You may be able to change that in the BIOS, but I would recommend putting your boot drive internal to the machine, and putting your storage drive in the ODD caddy. That way you can also swap the HDD for the ODD and still have a functioning system to install software from disc.

Thanks. I kinda thought along that route, and didn't know if the ODD SATA port was gimped at all, I'd rather have the SSD at full speed.

Looks like I'll be living off my netbook for a little while until I get my laptop up and running with this new config... woo hoo! :)

The SATA port shouldn't be gimped in any way. But because that's the removable bay I'd keep it for removable media, instead of the main drive.

Well everything so far seems to have gone well, although it appears I (d'oh!) bought a 9.5mm drive adapter accidentally, needed 12.7mm. I got it to fit, but had to wedge some foam under it to keep it secure. I ordered from eBay so can't return it. Only cost me $15 shipped, but I think I'll order the 12.7mm version, at least I can run this for now.

Doing a system image at the moment, and then I'll play play play. :)
