Can you tell us the model number of the optical drive in your VGN FS485B?
Reason being there are two types of optical drive interfaces, ATAPI, and mini-SATA
Mini Sata drives just started appearing around august of 2008, so if your system is much older it most likely runs ATAPI.
ATAPI has a female port with about 40 small pins lining its perimeter.
MINI-SATA has two small male connectors side by side, with 6 and 7 pins respectively
Sony usually uses slim line drives in there laptops, so telling us the model number of the one you have can help you figure out what thickness drive you need, and what interface you need.
What is wrong with your current optical drive?
Usually when an optical drive fails, it is just a matter of cleaning the lens on the drive. This can be done with a Q-tip and some rubbing alcohol. Gently clean the lens with a swirling motion until the lens is clean. Press softly because the lens can crack. The lens is about 3-5mm in diameter.

I'll use the money for a RAM increase -
I am glad to hear that it is working
