    Hi all,
Hopefully this is in the right section, apologies if not. Recently bought a Pavillion dv9560us with HD DVD drive. I have seen that HP have released an updated version with a Blu Ray drive. Warner have recently switched to Blu ray and I hear a lot of talk saying HD is dead in the water. If this turns out to be true does anyone know if it is possible to eventualy replace the drive for a Blu ray, or would it be worth my while.
Any opinions on the matter appreciated

If they've released a Blu-Ray drive for the same machine I'd say the chances were pretty good, but the devil is in the details. Do you plan to watch HD discs? I got to imagine the cost of the drive is high though it will probably come down.

HD Dvd and Blu Ray....being a HD Geek (meaning me) I am fed up with the whole debacle. HD just signed Dreamworks so the playing field is a bit more even. Either way, whether you go Blu ray or HD DVD you'll lose.

Now, if your basically using it for back up purposes, Blu ray holds more information. However, I could only imagine how long it would take to back up 50 gigs on a HD DVD....hours....maybe even an entire day. go with a good external HD for back ups.

Sorry, but I won't spend a penny on either side until they decide on one format over another....which will NOT happen!!!! I'll wait for the Dual readers/writers before I'd do anything. Wait!!!!! If you can.....

I have 2 HD TV's (Hitachi and Toshiba) and it's literally killing me not jumping on the wagon...but I'll wait. sorry, i guess what I am saying is cancel the whole HD/Blu Ray on the order and put that money towards better use. Unless it's too late and you have the unit in your posession. if you have, no worries and enjoy the HDMI output on your HD tv.......

Thanks for the input. I have already received the notebook, which I am delighted with. I have yet to use the HD Drive, and don't really intend to unless the price of HD DVD's goes down. I mainly watch movies I've downloaded. I'll be using my external hard drive for back up purposes. The notebook came with the drive from the store, and it was within my price limit so doesnt bother me too much. And like you said the HDMI output will be put to good use.

One more thing, is it true that HD DVD's are region free ?

looks like it is....well, for now....but for how long? I don't know. I guess this REALLY equals the playing field.....seems like a lot of overseas titles for Blu Ray are available on HD DVD....

Amazon has tons of HD titles 50% off. For $15, you can't really go wrong.

Well, Ironically my DVD player was on the "fritz". I was looking at a Pioneer "upconverting" Dvd player for $109. Make a long story short, I got a HD Dvd player for $41 more, includes 2 HD Dvd's and 5 more free by mail....could not pass it up. Must mean HD Dvd is dying?

    I'm a hypocrite!!!

I wouldn't bother investing $500 in a technology that has no guarantee of not becoming obsolete in a few months.

If you want to select the format with the best chances of reaching mass adoption like dvd did then go with Blu ray. Hd-dvd is on its last legs with the defection of warner to blu ray exclusivity. If you need more information on this go to AVSforum.com there is ton of information with all the links to articles that you could ask for.
