Hi, i recently got a new laptop, generic brand-custom build. I plan to take it with me to uni next year where I will be using the battery a lot. However, at the moment i do not need the battery and have removed it from the laptop and have been running on wall power. I fully charged charged and discharged the battery three times before i removed it. I removed it when it was at 40% charge.
I am just wondering if i need to put the battery back in the notebook every now and again and give it a full charge and discharge to keep its storage at optimum levels??? Also please let me know if there is anything else i can do to keep my batteries storage capacity at a high level before i get to uni.

I wouldnt go to such extreme measures, cause the battery will run fine as long as you cycle it ever few weeks. Removing it from the system and leaving it charged at 40% really makes no difference. Many have batteries which last beyond 3-4 years, and never remove them from their systems. I have many batteries which I have never removed from my system, which have lasted years, without problems. I even have an old toshiba battery on a 80286 laptop, which still runs perfectly after 12 years.
What really kills the life of the battery, is using like 80% of the battery, and than charging it immediately. The battery will get hot from discharging it, and than force chaging it will cause even more heat to generate, which is not good for the battery cells.
If you are concerned about battery life, you should look into undervolting, you can maximize your battery life, typically you gain around 15-20 minutes of battery life.

Because you will not be using for an extended period of time. Store with 40% to 50% charge in cool environment until you head to Uni. There is no need to do anything with it while stored. As a matter of fact deep cycling every 30 days would work against your goals.
The battery guide is good info. But well it trys to teach much and can get get confusing when trying to interpret for all contingencies.
