I ordered a 120gb Intel 510 for a boot drive and a 750gb WD Scorpio Black as a data drive. I should be receiving the 510 shortly but the Scorpio is back ordered so it will come later. I read somewhere that I should have both drives in when I install windows. My question is, does it matter if I install windows when I get my 510 and add the Scorpio at a later date? Also if I add the Scorpio later, how do I go about formatting it? Thanks.

You can easily install the 510 as your OS drive now and then install the data drive later. Just don't fill up the SSD with stuff while waiting for your storage drive.

Once you are up and running on the SSD, you can install in the storage HDD, windows will automatically detect it. If it doesn't you can go to START, type "disk management" select "create and format disk partitions", and then select the drive you want and format it. Easy as pie. I am actually hoping to get the same SSD and HDD myself one day.

    Good luck

PS: By chance you just happen to have the EXACT same laptop config I need tested. Can you run 3DmarkVantage and Passmark (CPU test only) and post your result here..... http://forum.notebookreview.com/ali...enware-m17x-benchmark-thread-part-4-a-74.html

I just bought a 2720 CPU, but I need to test it. You have the same GPU and RAM as me, so you would be the perfect reference point.

    Thanks

Thanks a million. If you can run those 2 benchmarks and post the result in that thread or here, you will make my day!

No you only want the SSD for initial install else it will put the 100mb boot partition on the mechanical HDD

    No.

IMO it is better to have ONLY the system drive hooked up for the Windows install. I've seen Windows swap drive letters (call the Windows drive D and the secondary drive C). I've seen Windows put the 100MB system partition on the second drive. I've read numerous times in forums of people accidentally installing Windows on their secondary data drive, thus losing their data which was the point of their second drive. <-- This obviously doesn't apply to you, but I think it is good to get into the habit of not having the second drive hooked up.

Thanks for the input. I went ahead and did the clean install with just the SSD installed and it went perfect so far. Now I just have to wait until tomorrow to install the HDD when it arrives.
