I'm going to order a W3J in the next couple of days with a 7200 HD. The question is: Hitachi or Seagate?

I want the fastest HD possible for gaming. Normally, I would go for the Hitachi because it's generally considered a little quicker. However, it seems like the the W3J also has heat problems and I've read that the seagates generally run a little cooler. When thinking about the heat, keep in mind that in addition to the 7200 upgrade, the W3J will sport a T2600 (2.16) duo core and 2ghz of Ram.

I have no problem with a machine that runs hot. But, I certainly don't want it locking up on me!! SO: is the heat issue a big enough deal that I should go with the seagate? Or can I just get the Hitachi without worrying about it?

Eddie perhaps you could comment, as I am thinking about getting it from geared2play. Have you had any heat problems with your maxed out W3Js?

to be perfectly honest any brand will do. Im sure some people have preferences but me I have never been so unbiased. But follow the sinple rule of getting the fastest you can afford, and size will come after that.

I agree with you that the Hitachi is somewhat faster, though I'm not sure how much actual difference you will "feel."

Ya I guess the difference between speed and heat is probably too small to notice.

    Thanks for the replies.

As above it is very little difference, but the seagate creates a tiny bit less heat. In the benchmarks that I read, (sorry can't find them) the hitachi was faster, but only if you are talking about sata. The pata 7200 drives by both were about equal speed wise

W3J only support PATA. Probably, you have to give up to think about the SATA hard drive. If you would like to choose a 7200rpm, Seagate and Hitachi are the best one. I'm using a Hitachi 7200rpm 80GB, it is fast and very good so far. I guess that Seagate is more expensive than Hitachi and give us a 5 years warranty.
