what is the most common way a computer overheats? Also, when i have my laptop lieing down on some kinda of blanket, i have noticed that the fan starts to run louder. Is that bad for a laptop? I have a Dell Inspiron 1150, Celeron with Windows XP. Also, what happens if a laptop over heats? Will it auto turn off?

You shouldn't block the fan or the vent at all. Heat is any computer's worst enemy. If the CPU reaches a critical temp, the notebook should automatically shut down.

    Hello,

I also have 1150. Try to clean the fan and the vents. One time, my 1150 started to shut down all of the sudden and before that, the fan was loud. At Dell's forum, someone suggest me to clean the vents and fan with compress air to clean out the dusts. After that, it was brand new again.

It will auto shut off when the core reaches a certain temp.
My previous laptop *Toshiba* did it all the time. It took
me a while before discovering the air intake was on the bottom.
Blocking that kept fresh air from getting in. It would do it any time I
left it on my bed or couch or carpet. Get a laptop cooler usb fan if you
must have it on surfaces like this!!!!!!

If you use it on your lap while sitting on a couch, or somthing like that, just prop it (spread your legs so the vent is in the middle, perhaps) so that the vent isn't blocked. It's really not hard to do, and doesn't require any contortion. I use mine on my lap, and the temps don't change one bit. In fact, usually the vent has even more air flow because there isn't a desk a quarter inch below the vent.
