    Hello, people of this forum.

I would like to learn how to overclock my graphics card, but first I want to ask a few questions about that.

Is overclocking safe? Can it damage the laptop? Will it improve performance much? Is it easy to do? Do I need to access the BIOS or is there special software that allow overclocking?

If you can answer me these questions and you know how to overclock a graphics card, please tell me how to do it. :)

    Thanks much.

(FYI the laptop I own is an Envy 17 3D-2290NR)

Overclocking can be potentially dangerous, and can possibly void your warranty. Yes it will improve 3D performance for gaming, but how much depends on your overclock. For ATI cards, I use TRIXX by Sapphire, you can also overclock in CCC. Both can be done in Windows.

Slowly overclock your GPU, testing fully to make sure you get no artifacts/BSOD.

Do I need to know SPECIFICALLY the manufacturer of the card? (Sapphira, EVGA, Asus, Club 3D, etc.) in order to overclock my laptop? And also, what are artifacts, is it like static on the screen?

The 6850m in that machine is undervolted to 0.9v and doesn't have strong cooling. I honestly wouldn't bother, you're not going to get very far.

I can post some overclocking results when I get my Aspire 7750G tomorrow (possibly within the week or next week).

Nope. Unlike desktop video cards, laptop video cards are unbranded OEM products - the "manufacturer" of a laptop video card is basically the OEM who "manufactured" the laptop (Dell, HP, Lenovo, etc.). As a result, there's no branding aside from AMD and Nvidia.

Just look for any weird graphical glitches - garbled pixels, messed up colors, etc.

I managed to get 750/950 @ 75 degrees Celsius stable.

About 15% gain in fps, puts the the 6850M same as default 6770M.

    Default clock is 675/800.

    Edit:

The above overclocking of the 6850M is just for testing and for the sake of this thread however I do not plan to keep my card overclocked even though the overclock was stable with no signs of overheating or throttling.

The 6850M at default clocks is sufficient for my gaming usage and thus I'm do not plan to keep my card overclocked once I have a fresh Windows re-installed besides I do not like to overclock anything besides ram (if possible for tighter timings) on a laptop.

Just overclocking the memory alone on the 6850M yields almost no performance gain and thus not worth the time and effort for me to do so.

I also managed to overclock my GPU using MSI Afterburner.

Although I didn't get much difference in FPS rates in Crysis 2, I did get a lot of differences in Black Ops, where it was in 720p 30fps now I can play in 1080p ~40fps. Thanks for tips ^^

    (My clocks are now 700/960)
