I have an Asus W3V and as many of you have heard, this laptop has some serious heating problems. It's equipped with a 1.86 Centrino and an X600 GPU, but only has a single fan that acts as a heatsink of both of them! I've searched all over, but I can't seem to figure out a way to make the fan spin at maximum power all the time, is this possible?

You will need a program like Notebook Hardware Control. I believe you can control that in there. That is going to reduce fan life, but better to replace the fan than the laptop.

I've got NHC, but it doesn't let me throttle the fan, just says ACPI Fan Control (ready in next release)

Ummm....I8kfangui or I9kfangui might do it too. Check those out.

This is an Inspiron controller, are you sure it's safe to use on an Asus?
It won't read any of the temperatures.
Or control fan speeds -

Dough!!! Forgot about that....umm...those are the only ones that I can think off the top of my head. Do you have the latest version of NHC?
-
what about Speedfan did you try it?
-
Speedfan doesn't even detect the fanspeeds, and yes, I do have the latest NHC version (Beta 03)
-
Then your BIOS simply lacks the necessary info. Wait for an update
-
That's strange, I thought W3Vs worked with Speedfan. You try messing around with the settings in it?
Try again, if not then I guess you're out of luck.
Oh yeah, since you have an Asus W3V, try the Asus forum/section as those guys will help you out.

While heat is bad, are you sure the Asus engineers didnt engineer it to dissipate heat the way it does? Are you touching it and feeling that its hot? or Reading an onboard diagnostic?
I read about Mac users saying their computers felt too hot and so they opened it up and did their own stuff to it and it ran cooler to the touch. Bad move. The same heat is still given off, but now its not dissipating through the means it was before. -
Try undervolting CPU - it can bring temp in games up to 15 degrees C.
Check my sig,
