I've read this thread where someone explained how to overclock a 1.6Ghz Dothan to 2.16Ghz. Well it involved pin modding and I don't want to open up my laptop yet.
Now I saw this program SetFSB, will it give me options to overclock my system?
Or any other ways to do it? thanks

I am now at 1.75Ghz. If i go further my music starts sounding like strong noise.
Any recommendations on getting further?
Edit: just restarted media player and now I'm getting further.
I'm monitoring my CPU temp, it seems fine at 54C. Can I just go higher to let's say 2.0GHz without any big risk?
Update: Stable at 1.75Ghz, but crashed at 1.8Ghz. If anyone has tips please post. -
Just a guess, but you may not have enough voltage reaching the processor to increase its speed any further. In which case overvolting may help.
I'd been looking into this program myself but it seems I have an unsupported motherboard - Dell 0UW306 on Intel GM965 (that first symbol is a zero, not ah "oh"). Though perhaps it's for the better. -
In my case, I think it's not the voltage. Because I reach exactly the same point on very low voltage.
Maybe it's my memory or videocard? -
philflow, you should check out pin modding, it is very easy, and you will get the additional voltage and higher fsb, by playing with the BSEL's pushing it from 100 to 133Mhz.

Keep in mind that things like memory, AGP(video), PCI(peripherals+video?) etc. are also affected by raising the FSB and you crashing could be related to them and not the CPU.
Anyway just something else to complicate things.

Give us a screen shot of what CPU-Z says for your computer? If you’re using a 1.6 CPU, then I would think you have a 100 FSB system….which also means you can’t pin-mod. -
Which PLL are using in SetFSB..??

Which version/clock generator of SetFSB did you download? It seems you are using the wrong one. The stock voltages can handle up to 2.1ghz. If you are undervolted, turn it off.
Pin mod only works with the Sonoma platform (up to 533mhz FSB). Technically you put a 400mhz FSB chip like the 725 and the pin mod raises it to 533mhz thus overclocking.

Yes I switched off RMclock undervolting, which surprisingly, does not seem to improve results. This may indicate that the problem is in my memory or GPU maybe?
I tried checking my Bios for memory timing but did not see anything. My GPU is a Ati Radeon 9700 with 64MB.

I just found the 1.x version Intel855GM/GME - ICH4M which seems to be exactly my chipset. BUT when I unzip it Avira says it has a virus. Screenshot included. False warning? -
Each motherboard has got its own PLL chip....motherboards with same chipsets do not necessarily have same PLLs....!!
It could be that one of those PLLs is your exact PLL and maybe not, since I also tried all the PLLs in SetFSB and found one which crashed less often..
Knowing the exact PLL will help you to overclock much easily..!! You could try searching for your PLL by googling or do it the old fashion way..
And Remember, by overclocking the FSB, everything connected to the Northbridge is going to get overclocked..!! I don't know the chipset diagram but it could be the increase in frequency of the GPU or the RAM which is stopping you from going above 1.8..!! -
The GM855 chipset only has 3 variations of PLL chips. (overclockable ones)
I believe thats a false positive Philflow. I use that exact version of SetFSB and AVG8.0 didnt detect anything. I guess SetFSB can be invasive to the system and can be used maliciously.
I think i know a solution, try this first: Disable RMclock from startup and restart your notebook. Try OC'ing to 2.1ghz again -
I'll try the Intel 855 version and I'll report back my results.
Edit: I've scanned with Bitdefender online, and it finds the same trojan. Trojan.Killwin.c. I'll run it anyway.
Results with version 1.x for i855GMEm Ultra Version 1.5e, Intel855GM/GME - ICH4M, crashes very quickly.
Does anyone know if i should stay with version2.x of try to find the appropriate version of 1.x? -
Try out CPUcool, it does have support for those 2 PLLs and many more, if you are picking out PLLs at random.

Is it without any risk to try this higher FSB with CPUcool? I mean this Asus laptop still serves me very well. I would not want to damage it. -
Since increasing the frequency of the FSB, increases the frequency of the GPU, CPU and the RAM (or anything else connected to the northbridge)....Probably your CPU and FSB would be able to go upto 133MHz but the problem of crashing maybe caused by the unstable frequency to the GPU and the RAM..!!
If clockgen comes up with some new PLLs, then it would be much easier to OC by locking out the PCI-E..!! Check out clockgen and see if the PLLs you were using are supported by clockgen..!!
And check out any overclocking forum, it is not recommended to be trying out PLLs, without knowig the exact one. I am not sure if the i855GM just came with three overclockable PLLs since the ICS9248EF-xxx - family has loads of overclockabe PLLs..!!
I never liked SetFSB because it doesn't have any new PLLs added to it and when I emailed the guy, he said that my PLL can't be overclocked, whereas I found that PLL in CPUcool a week later..!!
It should be without risk, but remember overclocking with the wrong PLL WILL cause damage..So, if you do not know the exact PLL on that motherboard, best not to take the risk. (You will find that written all over the place in CPUcool as well)

Ok, Click 'I don't know' and you will goto the PLL selection screen....
And make sure you have the latest version (8.0.7), as it has got the latest PLLs..!! Or cross-check the PLL nos available in the software with those available on the site..
When you select your PLL....a fine-tuning option should be available in place of the box marked in black....

1. Select 'I don't know' on the mainboard selection screen....(Image 1) {since each motherboard has a pre-selected PLL in the software, so if your mobo is not listed, you will have to select the PLL manually}
2. Select the PLL you want to choose from the PLL drop-down box....(Image 2)
Since you only know of two PLLs, go for the 9148-99 and the other 9x5xx-- one you knew....!!
Still it is advisable to just remove the upper case of the laptop, and scan for the PLL chip. It is not very hard to do and you do not need to even touch anything on the motherboard..!! Just click a good pic of it....It should be on the opposite side of the CPU socket (on the upper side of the mobo) near the Fan (Hole).... -

Try out clockgen....it does have support for the ICS 952618..!!
Lock the increase to the PCI-E....This way you would come to know that the crash is because of the PCI-E instability or due to the wrong PLL..!!
I have seen many results on the Pentium M 1.6 being overclocked to 2+ Ghz..!! -

Update: Ok when I get above 1750 my browser sometimes suddenly disappears (crashes). I'm thinking this could be a sign of unstable memory. Is this correct? -
I really think it's my memory by the errors I get. Browser suddenly crashing, while the system keeps running for a while.

Well, I am not sure about it, but the crashes should not be because of the memory..!! Say, if the max frequency of the memory is 100MHz, even increasing the FSB to say 133MHz, should not affect the memory at all..!! It should just keep on running at 100MHz....
I used to OC my Dell's FSB to 266MHz, which had a X9000 and PC2-6400 ram....Though the CPU handled the increased FSB, I locked out the increase to the PCI-E and AGP and the CPU worked effectively at 266MHz and the Ram at 200MHz..(max speed of the PC2-6400)
To be honest, I don't have a clue about it, because from what I have experienced, the ram just stays at its own max frequency, even after the FSB is increased, giving a rather improper FSB : DRAM ratio such as 5:8, etc etc -
For example if I run at 1600Mhz the RAM runs at 166.
If I run at 1700Mhz the RAM increases to 178. -
Yes, then that could be the problem and maybe that is why pin-modding is more popular with Dothans....since the ram - I presume might be DDR 400 or DDR 333, may not be able to cope with the increased frequency supplied when overclocking the FSB..!!
