Hi everyone:
Is there any way to overclock the i7-2720QM? Has anyone tried it?
Thanks and regards

I doubt it.

Karamazovmm Overthinking? Always!
The overclock was done using the FSB (front side bus), so that you could raise the clocks in the multipliers for example:
you have usually 100mhz or 133mhz, and this is multiplied by 10 - 13
so you got your clocks, raising the FSB clocks lead you to raise the clock overall.
Now the problem is that the Controller that does that is in the cpu itself, and you cant raise those. So the older overclock ways are done, we have to find new ones.
What you can is to get a k cpu, or an extreme cpu, so that you can raise the number of multipliers applied to the clock, thus raising the clock.
This is one of the losses of the integration of the northbridge in the cpu die. -
^Short answer: no

Hehe ok ok... thanks for the info guys!

Nope. Thanks to intel , OCing is dead unless you pay 1000 for thier extreme processors. More ways for intel to rip us off. Good thing i got this G73 instead of something else. It looks like there's going to be great demand for Sager NP8690 and 8760 with their upgradeble GPU slots and oc able CPU's.

Even a non-overclockable second generation i7 CPU is going to be more powerful than an overclocked first generation i7 CPU though.
-
AFAIK, only the 920xm and 940xm can be overclocked in the 8690/8760. And the 2630QM is faster than the 920 and 940 so...

whats the point in OCing? Its already blazing fast and there isnt really many games out there that would fully stress this cpu.
Laptop cpus are not built to be OC'd and using fsb to do so will cause strange effects. The most you can pump out of using such program is like 500mhz which isnt a huge OC anyways. -
OC'ing a laptop is generally a bad idea. I realize that's an unpopular idea on notebookreview where everyone likes to squeeze out as much power as they can... but unless the laptop is built for overclocking (the ones that come with 940x) it's probably not going to do well with the extra heat anyway.
-
the 2630 is only faster at those cpus stock speeds. but who buys those and keeps them at stock right.
-
If overclocking isn't your thing, it doesn't mean you have to look down on those who do. Plenty of people enjoy it and benefit from it without any problems whatsoever.
-
How does an overclocked 920mx hold up to the new sandy bridge CPUs?
-
doesn't hold a candle to them. SB is 20% faster clock for clock than the old nehalem architecture. you would have to overclock that 920xm quite a bit to get to SB entry level i7 power.

Any numbers/links?
