I'm having some overheating problems with my ASUS X83VM.

    Background:

Normally everything works fine, but when I play games it overheats. Nothing too bad has happened: I noticed the problem when I was playing Team Fortress 2 and out of nowhere (had the game for months) it started getting choppy a few minutes into playing. So I shut the game down and loaded up ASUS NB Probe and started playing again. A few minutes into playing, NB Probe started beeping. I closed down the game, and NB Probe showed CPU temp as "Fatal." I repeated this while also running HWMonitor to get real temp readings which I list below along with my comp specs. I have no idea what ACPI is but since it had the highest temp, I listed that too.

    Specs:
    Intel Core2Duo [email protected]
    GeForce 9600M GS

    Temps:
    GPU - 57C (idle) 89C (load)
    CPU - 45C (idle) 76C (load)
    ACPI - 59C (idle) 91C (load)

So I'm thinking I've got a fan problem, especially because the fan doesn't seem to be blowing as much air out of the laptop as it used to, and I accidentally left it on the couch once while it was on. I tried blowing out the dust, but that didn't help. The problem now is that I can't find the exact fan that my laptop uses, but I did find the heatsink/fan assembly:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/Asus-N80-X83V-X...temQQimsxZ20091105?IMSfp=TL091105194003r28179

..which uses a different fan than mine. The fan has the same shape/size/voltage but uses .36 amps instead of .28 amps. I found that I can buy the fan by itself here:

    http://www.pchub.com/uph/model/0--11743-0-1/KFB0505HHA-parts.html

The second two with 4 pin power cables, seem like they could work. I was about to just buy the cheap one, but I want some input from random people on the Internet. Anyone got any advice? Mostly I'm just worried about the amperage on the fan, and the fact that that website sells what looks like the same fan for 3 different prices. Weird.

    Thanks!

Undervolt and try some new thermal paste! Although getting a new fan isn't a bad idea either. I'm still looking for Inspiron compatible fans....

Have you cleaned the internals of the laptop for dust and other debris? Use a can of compressed air to dislodge dust caking the fan blades, then use a strong vacuum cleaner to suck it out. The best cleaning job would involve opening the laptop itself and cleaning the heatsink out; chances are you have a wall of dust backing up against the heatsink fins, preventing the fan from pushing enough air.

    It's working again! Thanks!

Since you guys mentioned it, I went out and got some compressed air. It was exactly what you said Bog: the fins of the heatsink had a some dust that was preventing air from leaving the laptop. I had opened it up and cleaned the dust off the fan blades with a Qtip before I posted this, but I didn't realize that the heatsink was the problem area.

    Thanks again!!
