I recently have been having problems with a hot and noisy computer. Ever since I downgraded to XP. Its not that big of a problem, but it had gotten to the point where it became a little annoying. I thought maybe the fans just needed a good cleaning. So, I got compressed air, opened the laptop up, and cleaned it. Unfortunately, I let the fan spin with the compressed air, which means I definitely overspun it. The computer wouldnt turn on: check cpu fan error message. So I thought i had destroyed the motor. I opened it back up to get the part number for a new one, decided to see if I can 'feel' anything wrong with the fan, spun it slowly by hand, met some resistance, then it spun smoothly. Back together, the fan turns on, everythings fine...maybe? Its still a little loud. How can I tell if I truly damaged the fan, and how long do you think it would last like it is? Should I replace the fan?

I'd replace the fan. If it fails you could toast the entire laptop. I can't imagine that fans are hugely expensive.

It sounds like the pressure of the air, and the revolving of the fan may have caused a bearing to come dislodged. By you manually spinning it, most likely forced the bearing back into place.
If the fan is running louder than it used to, than it is either 1) you have too many programs running in the background, causing the cpu to be more active, and thus run hotter, or 2) it is the current weather. It is pretty hot these days and depending on where you live, the temperature may be around th upper 80's and 90's, so as a result system temperatures will be higher, and thus the fan on more often.
