Does the T5750 (2.0ghz, 2mb L2) that comes with the Gateway P-172S FX share sockets with Penryn chips? If i upgrade to a Penryn, say, the T9300, will the 800mhz FSB allow me to use DDR2-800? Also, is it even worth it to buy the FX for $1399 in the first place?

If you're going to upgrade, might as well go with the P6860FX at Best Buy. If you do however, still wish to get the 172S FX, call up gateway to get extra discounts.

It will work with the T9300.

DDR2-800 will just downclock to DDR2-667. Not the fault of laptop, but the platform.

The thing is, I don't want to pay $100-150 worth of tax. I think I might just go with the stock 172S FX. 2.0ghz should be enough for me since i'm primarily a gamer and don't require the fastest cpu. However, does anyone know where Gateway would ship the laptop from if i ordered online? I live in Texas so I'd still have to pay tax if they ship it from the same state.

Erm, it doesn't matter. You'll still be paying tax from Gateway.
